  Baltimore & the Islands “Big Heart” Guided Walks1 – 2 October 2011

Suggested donation: per person per walk €5.00 Youngsters aged 10 to 15 €2.50 Children under 10 free Saturday 1 October * Inish Beg Estate – 10.30 am Meet at the entrance gates along the drive to Inishbeg House for registration and walk around the estate, see the walled herb garden, meander through a “lost and found” orchard, stroll to the river and look for otters, enjoy the organic farm with pigs, sheep, ponies & birds and wildlife. Walk approx 1.5 hours, suitable for all the family. Optional lunch afterwards in nearby “Sibin” - Rath. * Knockomagh Hill (Lough Hyne) – 2.00 pm Meet at Lough Hyne car park for registration. Europe's first designated nature reserve and most studied marine site in the EU, surrounded by hilly terrain, rolling hills covered in heather & gorse. A beautiful walk through Knockomagh Woods (197m), across and down the north facing hills, past holy wells. Enjoy panoramic views over Roaringwater Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and nearby villages and the lake itself of course. Walk approx 2.5 hours, moderate (route is hilly with plenty of steps / uneven paths through woodland). Sunday 2 October * Cape Clear Island - 11.45 am Meet on Baltimore Pier for registration / ferry trip to Cape departing at 12noon (walk starts at 1 pm outside An Siopa Beag, Cape Clear). Oileán Chléire is Ireland's southernmost inhabited Gaeltacht island. Famous for its wild romantic scenery, sparkling harbours, cliffs and bogs and lake, heather, gorse and wild flowers and birdlife and wonderful views of a 14th century O’Driscoll castle, the islands in Roaringwater Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the Fastnet Lighthouse. Visit megalithic standing stones, a 5000 year-old passage grave, a 12th century church ruin and Saint Ciarán’s well. Walk approx 2.5 hours, suitable for "all-terrain buggies" on rough terrain. Return ferry at 4 pm. Ferry costs €16 pp, family 2 adults/2 children €40 & children €8 Please Note: All youngsters must be accompanied by an adult Suitable clothing & footwear required.
