Cape Clear Charity Fun Day goes from Strength to strength

Cape Clear Island Annual Charity Fun Day is planned for Sunday 19 August next. Over the past few years it has established itself as one of the highlights of the Island’s social and recreational calendar with some families arranging their summer holidays especially to enjoy this fabulous event. The best things in life are free and the event is characterized by the outpouring of community support and voluntary effort that makes it all possible. North Harbour is festooned with bunting and a range of children’s activities such as stalls, races, face drawings and all sorts of games add both colour and excitement. Local musicians provide live music throughout the day and competitors gear up for a range of fun contests. Last year, for the first time the Cape Clear Dog Show ( open to beauty’s and beasts alike) and open to all canines proved especially hilarious and great fun and excitement was generated by the ‘Cape Clear Triathlon’ , involving kayaking and swimming and running. This year we shall be joined by the new Baltimore Lifeboat, Alan Massey for the first time. For the first time also events are taking place throughout the weekend with a race night on Friday 17th and a Family Quiz night on Saturday evening the 18th. The amounts raised are commendable, over €5,000 last year and this year the funds will be divided between the RNLI and the Motor Neuron Association. Great fun, great community spirit and two great causes, the Cape Clear Fun Day is not to be missed. Séamus Ó Drisceoil, Oileán Chléire.
